Where: Bookish, 1005 NW 36th Street, Oklahoma City, OK
Price: FREE!

2025 is here and VHSANDCHILL OKC is resurrecting one of our classic screening series from days past - VHS GRINDHOUSE is back!

VHS GRINDHOUSE is a series of classic films that may or may not be the greatest films ever made! This VHS delights are pulled straight from the VHSANDCHILL OKC collection. Movies that DESERVE their day in court for the crimes committed TO them or BY them! These films will scream from the heavens the madness that is their message!

It is the future; the year is 2013 and Snake Plissken is back at it! With a superweapon in the hands of revolutionaries, it's up to Snake to retrieve the weapon and save the civilized world as we know it and he only has 10 hours to do infiltrate a post apocalyptic L.A. to do so!

A sequel from the year 1996 and one that definitely had some big shoes to fill, this movie opened to 50/50 critical reviews. Though, the director, John Carpenter (Halloween, Escape from N.Y.), prefers this one to the original. Featuring a cast including Kurt Russell (Escape from N.Y.), Stacey Keach, Steve Buscemi, and Peter Fonda, with Pam Grier and Bruce Campbell! Often missunderstood, this classic sequel pushes those 90's film to the absolute limits of their budget!

Featuring hang gliders, surfing, cannibals and more! This movie oozes 90's in the most wonderful ways!

"One question: which one of you assholes gets to die trying to stick me?"

In the future, one thing stands between the annihilation of Earth by out-of-control Cyborgs - TRUCKERS IN SPACE! It's up to a ragtag group of weary working-class heroes to save us all!

1996 is spitting more fire with this delightful straight-to-home video release! From famed director Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator, Robot Jox, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Fortress), this sci-fi extravaganza stars the likes of Dennis Hopper, Stephen Dorf, Debi Mazar, Charles Dance, George Wendt, and Barbara Crampton! Unfortunately, never getting a theatrical release delegated this to home video obscurity. Let's help give this movie the proper fandom it deserves!

This film has space pirates, square pigs, space waitresses, and killer robots! It's an experience that ABSOLUTELY must be seen with a group of friends, in a quiet, little independent bookshop, obviously.

"I pray you allow me a few moments to coordinate my seldom-used reproductive sequencer."

It's the year 2078 and we're joining actor Peter Weller (Robocop) as he leads a rag-tag group of exhausted soldiers, tired of fighting a long war on a far away mining colony when a new, dangerous machine enemy becomes far more deadly than expected!

Another swing and a miss from 1995. We're given a war weary future with holograms that cast shadows, anti-radiation cigarettes, rock bugs, and a gratuitous sponge bath scene! This movie is based on the Phillip K. Dick (Blade Runner, Total Recall) short story 'Second Variety' and tells another story of technology gone awry. With a $20 million dollar budget, it flopped hard. Let's see if 1995 was wrong again!

So let's gather and join the soldiers of Sirius 6B as they fight for their lives against an uncaring, constantly evolving inhuman enemy!

"If you're gonna be a rock, be a rock; don't be a bug!"

Movies that DESERVE their day in court for the crimes committed TO them or BY them! These films will scream from the heavens the madness that is their message!

In the spring of 1995, director Rachel Talalay (Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare) tried to bring us a vision that we were not ready for. This was a comic book adaptation like no other. The source material is so hallowed and an absolute jumble of genres and metafiction, that she may as well had tried to touch the sun. This film stood no chance at the 90's box office. Opening alongside movies like Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump. This psychedelic punk, anti-establishment opus was just ahead of its time.

So here, in the magical future year of 2024, we will gather in a small independent bookstore and bath ourselves in a killer soundtrack and bare witness to simple story - about a girl and her tank.

Starring Lori Petty, Naomi Watts, Malcom, McDowell, and Ice-T as a supersolder created from human and kangaroo DNA named T-Saint (I kid you not!)

"Look, if you want to torture me, spank me, lick me, do it. But if this poetry shit continues, shoot me now, please."

The Greatest Film That Never Was - CRUSADE!

12/24/2024

  • a report by Sean Peel for VHSANDCHILL.NET

“Tell me everything you remember about the True Cross.”

It’s January, 1993. Screenwriter Walon Green turns in a script for a film titled CRUSADE. Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and director Paul Verhoeven sign on the dotted line. I am 12 years old.

It is November, 1993. Carolco Pictures agrees to finance the film for $100 million dollars. Verhoeven is location scouting in Spain and begins building sets.

Robert Duvall, Jennifer Connelly, John Turturro, and Christopher McDonald are all cast and eager to start production. Contracts are signed. Less than a year later, filming will begin.

Schwarzenegger and Verhoeven have a final budget meeting with the studio. They are nervous about the costs. They ask for a guarantee. The Dutch filmmaker was going to object, but is kicked under the table by Arnold and agrees to the guarantee. Everyone at the table knows there’s no guarantees in this business. The green light is given.

It is May, 1994. One of the largest studio productions begins filming. Lighting is captured in a bottle. I am now 13 years old. The Flintstones is the #1 movie in America.

CRUSADE goes over budget. The studio feels fear as the demands from Verhoeven and Schwarzenegger grow, shattering the budget they had previously agreed on. It’s not the last time they will ask for more money.

A scathing report is published by the Hollywood Reporter, calling CRUSADE the Titanic of movies. They speculate the movie will destroy the studio and bankrupt the investors. A few days later Arnold will do a TV interview calling for calm and promising a movie like no other before vanishing back to Spain.

They call it ‘Arnie’s CRUSADE for the Lost Box Office’. They explain that the movie would have to be the highest grossing film of all time to break even. The public is frothing at the mouth for Verhoeven and Schwarzeneggers’ metaphorical blood.

In July of 1995, CRUSADE opens to worldwide critical and box office acclaim. It breaks all previous records. CRUSADE fever sweeps the nation. After an astounding 10 months in theaters, CRUSADE leaves theaters. I see it 6 times at my local cinema. I am 14 years old.

Paul Verhoeven and Arnold Schwarzenegger get 10 nominations and win 7 Oscars at the 68th Academy Awards. This was the arrival of the dawn of a new type of blockbuster. A true golden age of cinema between the two goes on for another decade hit after hit.

It is Christmas 1996, Jingle All the Way is a modest hit for Schwarzenegger and was negatively reviewed by critics. In 2014, the film is followed by a sequel in name only, Jingle All the Way 2, starring Larry the Cable Guy.

As I lie to myself, it is December 2024. I am drinking a Red Bull Vodka and imagining a past where Verhoeven didn’t honestly answer the studio execs that there’s no guarantees in filmmaking.

It is December 1992, Carolco has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. CUTTHROAT ISLAND opens to a measly $10 million dollars against a $100 million dollar budget.

“Take a look around. Take deep breath and with the stench of death in your nose, go tell God you’ve restored His kingdom.”

Below, I've included HD scans of the Crusade Press Kit. Please enjoy a peak at something that never was, but could've been amazing!

When: Thursday, December 12th at 7:30pm
Where: Rodeo Cinema on Film Row, 701 W Sheridan Ave
Price: FREE!

As 2024 draws to a close, VHSANDCHILL OKC and RODEO CINEMA present a special BLOCKBUSTED VIDEO screening! Let us take a look back at director Kevin Costner's vision of a post-apocalyptic "future" with the 1997 magnus opus - THE POSTMAN.

This adaptation of the 1985 novel by David Brin will take you to the desolate year of 2013, after the United States has been divided following a devastating civil war. Hope is on short supply and only one man can deliver it - KEVIN COSTNER!

Released nationwide on December 12th 1997 by Warner Brothers, THE POSTMAN was (incorrectly) panned by critics and grossed $30 million against a budget of $80 million. It was nominated for 3 Saturn Awards and won all five of its Golden Raspberry Award nominations, including Worst Picture.

We're going out with a bang this year with this FREE screening and giving a new generation a chance to experience this groundbreaking film on it's 27th Anniversary. Be prepared, this film runs nearly 3 (glorious) hours long. For testing your resolve, we'll be giving away 2 tickets to COWBOY BEBOP LIVE show on January 29th at THE TOWER THEATER!!!

Starring Kevin Costner, a powerhouse performance by Will Patton, Larenz Tate, Olivia Williams, with Giovanni Ribisi and Tom Petty!

"You have a gift, Postman. You give out hope like it was candy in your pocket."

BLOCKBUSTED VIDEO is BACK!!! For years, BLOCKBUSTED VIDEO presented by VHSANDCHILL OKC was your place for fun classic, retro screenings on original VHS tape! Rodeo Cinema on Film Row has been kicking butt left and right and we KNEW we had to come back and come back with a VENGANCE!

This month we wanted to try something NEW! This film was selected and going to be hosted by one of YOU! Billie Day will be hosting our special November BLOCKBUSTED VIDEO screening, and it is an absolute banger! This is real Midnight Movie stuff and you're all in for a treat!

In 1984, director Alex Cox (Sid & Nancy) blasted onto the scene with a film that was destined for greatness! Harry Dean Stanton and Emilio Estevez are a pair of REPO MEN who get themselves into a mess they could've never imaged.

This film opened to widespread acclaim and was called one of the best films of 1984. That's going up against heavy hitters like GHOSTBUSTERS and BEVERLY HILLS COP! Easily sliding into cult classic status in the years since, this is a film that should be seen by as many people as possible!

"The life of a repo man is ALWAYS intense."

A movie made famous with a GIF. Two Zombies, sub machine guns in hand, fire at each other with an ungodly amount of ammo! This is a movie that MUST be seen in person and on the big screen!

Just picture this, it's 1988, Joe Piscapo and Treat Williams are two LAPD cops out to arrest some Zombies when (gasp!) the inevitable happens and one of them is killed and then resurrected! Out to catch the killers, it's zombie vs zombie in a WILDLY bad (GOOD) 1980's hidden gem!

Originally envisioned by Keeva Danielle in 2017, BLOCKBUSTED VIDEO was revived with a twist! We're going to be riffing on this movie together. So talking, joking, singing, and pretty much everything else is, not only, allowed but ABSOLUTELY encouraged!

These screenings are always FREE and we invite you all out to come hang and have a good time riffing on this hilariously bad film!
