As 2024 draws to a close, VHSANDCHILL OKC and RODEO CINEMA present a special BLOCKBUSTED VIDEO screening! Let us take a look back at director Kevin Costner's vision of a post-apocalyptic "future" with the 1997 magnus opus - THE POSTMAN. This adaptation of the 1985 novel by David Brin will take you to the desolate year of 2013, after the United States has been divided following a devastating civil war. Hope is on short supply and only one man can deliver it - KEVIN COSTNER! Released nationwide on December 12th 1997 by Warner Brothers, THE POSTMAN was (incorrectly) panned by critics and grossed $30 million against a budget of $80 million. It was nominated for 3 Saturn Awards and won all five of its Golden Raspberry Award nominations, including Worst Picture. We're going out with a bang this year with this FREE screening and giving a new generation a chance to experience this groundbreaking film on it's 27th Anniversary. Be prepared, this film runs nearly 3 (glorious) hours long. For testing your resolve, we'll be giving away 2 tickets to COWBOY BEBOP LIVE show on January 29th at THE TOWER THEATER!!! Starring Kevin Costner, a powerhouse performance by Will Patton, Larenz Tate, Olivia Williams, with Giovanni Ribisi and Tom Petty! "You have a gift, Postman. Chat Pile's Raygun Busch had the distinct honor of choosing our final movie for this season of THE MISFIT MOVIE ZONE! More than anything we really want to show you films that are connected to our hearts in one way or another. They were there during heartache and triumph. They stand out because they were crafted with pure emotion and feeling. Some of these might not be considered 'the best', but there is a connection. Raygun could only think of one film, and it's one we've shown before but it's a film that MUST, nay, DEMANDS to be seen! Despite its title, it is not a slasher film but an unusual blend of political allegory, social commentary, and low-budget exploitation. Join us as we re-visit high school from 1976! Rodeo Cinema on Film Row has been kicking butt left and right and we KNEW we had to come back and come back with a VENGANCE! This revolutionary DIY parody film and hilarious reimagining of the classic autobiographical coming-of-age story follows an unconfident, closeted trans girl as she moves to Gotham City to make it big as a comedian by joining the cast of UCB Live - a government-sanctioned late night sketch show in a world where comedy has been outlawed. As mainstream success eludes our heroine, leading her to unite with a ragtag team of rejects, misfits, and a certain love interest named Mister J, "Joker the Harlequin" is born again as a confident (and psychotic) joker on a collision course with the city's fascist caped crusader. Vats of feminizing chemicals, sexy cartoon interludes, scarecrow psychiatrists, CGI Lorne Michaels, and psychedelic gender dysphoria all play supporting roles. Helmed by writer/director/editor/star Vera Drew and using her own life experiences as a basis for the film, THE PEOPLE'S JOKER is a deeply personal journey that's as much documentary as it is parody. THE PEOPLE’S JOKER features a superhero-sized cast of celebrated comedic talent in both voice and live action roles behind the vibrant kaleidoscope of characters that lampoon the iconic heroes and villains of the DC comics’ world, featuring cameos from comedy multi-hyphenate Tim Heidecker, award-winning actor Bob Odenkirk, Maria Bamford (Netflix’s Big Mouth, Adult Swim’s Teenage Euthanasia), and Scott Aukerman (Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis co-creator and host of the Comedy Bang! Bang! podcast), with Vera Drew, Lynn Downey (Amazon Prime Video’s Daisy Jones & The Six), Nathan Faustyn (SADDLED), and Kane Distler, in his film debut as Mister J. **PRESENTED ON ORIGINAL VHS IN GLORIOUS PAN & SCAN** Rodeo Cinema on Film Row has onsite concessions, and you can get adult beverages from the nearby CORE4 BREWERY, THE STUDY, and OKCIDER! These movies some might consider MISFITS, but we know there is hidden beauty within. Welcome to the MISFIT MOVIE ZONE! It might have been a while, but we're BACK! We're on to part 5 of this new 6-month series of screenings in which we delve into some of the lesser-known film greats. We tried to show this back in 2023 and again this June, but you can't say we give up easy - so come hell or high water, we doing this screening! Sean Peel from VHSANDCHILL OKC selected a film that's very special to him. More than anything we really want to show you films that are connected to our hearts in one way or another. They were there during heartache and triumph. They stand out because they were crafted with pure emotion and feeling. Some of these might not be considered 'the best', but there is a connection. Starring Shia LaBeouf, Evan Rachel Wood, and Mads Mikkelsen, this 2013 film deals with the subjects of love and loss, as well as hate and violence. Told by the ghost of his mother to visit Bucharest, Charlie Countryman enters into the hallucinatory, Romanian underworld filled with violence, and strangely enough, love. "Love is passion, love is mystery, love is pain. Above all things else, love is pain. It's the same old story of love and the promise it holds, of life and of living it in love, and perhaps a little bit of death. Yes, just a splash of death." Tickets for this 3rd screening are only $5.00 each and available at the door Doors: 7:00PM Show: 7:30PM When: Thursday, September 5th, 7:30pm Where: Point A Gallery, 2124 NW 39th st, OKC, OK Price: FREE Free Event!!! This is film series here in OKC where Raygun and I will present and discuss films that may have become LOST and FORGOTTEN. These movies some might consider MISFITS, but we know there is hidden beauty within. Welcome to the MISFIT MOVIE ZONE! It might have been a while, but we're BACK! We're on to part 4 of this new 6 month series of screenings in which we delve into some of the lesser known film greats. Our August screening was chosen by Sean from VHSANDCHILL OKC. More than anything we really want to show you films that are connected to our hearts in one way or another. They were there during heartache and triumph. They stand out because they were crafted with pure emotion and feeling. Some of these might not be considered 'the best', but there is a connection. In 1985 John Landis (Blue Brothers, An American Werewolf in London) directed a black comedy starring Jeff Goldblum and Michelle Pfeiffer as the leads. A down on his luck guy finds himself wrapped up with a mysterious stranger, on the run from various killers and thieves throughout 80's L.A. This film is one of those 80's flicks that never seemed to catch on in the collective love of classic 80's films. Honestly, I can kind of see why. It starts out all fun and madcap and then descends into violence and gets really dark by the end. The vibe of this movie is all over the place. It's also a lot of fun with cameos and appearances by David Bowie, Dan Aykroyd, David Cronenberg, Jonathan Demme, Jim Henson, and more! "Elvis wouldn't do this, AND I KNEW HIM!" Tickets for this 4th screening are only $5.00 each and available at the door. Doors: 7:00PM Show: 7:30PM |
